2-1. People who are prone to developing cysts

There are certainly people who are prone to developing sebaceous cysts. However, it is not medically clear what type of people are prone to developing sebaceous cysts. They often appear on the back, nape, cheeks, and earlobes.

2-2. What is a sebaceous cyst? Its causes and early symptoms

Imagine your navel closing and becoming buried inside your body.

A sebaceous cyst is a subcutaneous tumor that can appear anywhere on the body and is not cancerous. It is called a "lump of fat" but it is not actually fat. It is a cyst that is formed when dead skin cells and skin oils (sebum) that should fall off the skin accumulate in a sac-like structure just below the skin.

The initial symptoms are blackened pores and noticeable skin, and a slight lump is felt when touched closely. If left untreated, it will grow into a hemispherical mass. The lump is in close contact with the skin and feels harder than the surrounding area. If a black dot is found in the center, it is almost certainly a cyst.

The cause of its occurrence is unknown. It can also occur after bruises or trauma, or as acne scars. Medically, it is a mass formed when the epithelial components of the skin (epidermis and outer hair root sheath) fall into or under the skin to form a sac, and porridge-like dirt and oil accumulate inside it.

2-3. Spontaneous healing of sebaceous cysts is almost impossible.

It is rare for it to disappear naturally, and if left untreated, it will gradually grow and may exceed 10 cm in size. If you notice it, we recommend that you visit a doctor and have it removed surgically before it becomes painful. In most cases, it will be cured completely within a few days.

2-4. When it hurts... I left it until it turned into an inflamed cyst!

It may suddenly grow in size due to bacterial infection, become red and swollen, and become painful, and may be mistaken for a boil. Many people visit the clinic saying that they had a tingling sensation for 2-3 days, but left it untreated, and it suddenly grew larger and became very painful yesterday. If left untreated, the skin will break and pus and a smelly porridge-like mass will be discharged. If you try to squeeze the pus out when it is red and swollen, the sac may break and scatter into the fat tissue, resulting in a condition called pyoderma, which may become chronic. Avoid forcing the pressure to drain the contents, and consult a doctor as soon as possible to take medicine and receive treatment. It takes only a short time from the tingling sensation to the painful swelling. If you visit a clinic in this condition, it may take several weeks to heal, and you will regret it. Some medical institutions say that antibiotics are not effective against inflammatory sebaceous cysts, and that incision or steroid injection should be performed. However, each patient's condition is different, so it is best to leave it to the doctor's judgment.

Chin cyst
I thought it was just a pimple, so I watched it for 2-3 months, but it got bigger and bigger and started to get in the way of shaving. I bought an electric shaver and was able to shave.
However, I noticed something smelly while shaving, so I went to see a doctor. The smelly white stuff was the smell of the contents of a cyst.

Atheroma on the side of the head
About two months ago, I hit my head on a piece of furniture and developed a "bump". I thought it would heal naturally, but instead it started to get bigger, so I went to see a doctor.

Atheroma on the side of the head
He had noticed it for several years but had not paid much attention to it. His daughter, who had returned home for the first time in a long time, pointed it out to him and he came to see us. He said that people around him had told him, "The growths on your head are scary." The doctor explained, "This is a growth on the skin, and it is not connected to the brain. It can be easily removed."

Shoulder cyst
It has been there for over 6 months. Recently it has gotten bigger and a smelly white thing is coming out, so she came to see me and wanted it removed. (The dirt that has accumulated in the bag comes out from the black dots, so it smells bad.)

Pain on the back
My shirt smelled bad and I noticed I had a lump on my back.

Pain on the back
I can't see it on my back, so I don't know when it developed. I went to the doctor because I had a vague tingling sensation a few days ago. (It's accompanied by mild inflammation.)

Atheroma on thigh
I noticed a lump about two years ago. I was busy at work so I left it, but a week ago I started to feel something strange. I was prescribed an anti-suppuration medication at another hospital, but it didn't get better and the pain got worse, so I went to see him. (On the day of the visit, local anesthesia was administered and a small incision was made in the skin to drain the accumulated pus. Usually, the pain is greatly relieved after the incision.)

Pain on the back
The patient's back started hurting 4-5 days ago, and she noticed a lump for the first time. The pain was unbearable, so she searched the internet and visited the clinic. (On the day of the consultation, the patient was given local anesthesia, incised, and drained. If the pain is unbearable, immediate incision will provide relief.)

2-5. Ultrasonic echo inspection
This is a painless test that involves applying jelly to the skin. It is used to evaluate whether the cyst is a cyst or not, and whether there is any inflammation before surgery.

You can see that it is nicely rounded and there is no inflammation.
