It can occur on the upper or lower eyelid. The eyelashes prickle against the eyes and cause pain and discomfort due to increased eye discharge. The eyelashes will grow back even if they are removed, so there is no cure.
Inverted eyelashes on the upper eyelid are treated with a double eyelid. The eyelid plate (eyelid cartilage) is fixed to the eyelid so that the lashes turn outward when the eyelid is doubled.
Inverted eyelashes of the lower eyelid are caused by a loosening of the lower eyelid retractor tendon membrane or the orbicularis oculi muscle. Both occur with age.
On the other hand, some people are born with inverted eyelashes (congenital). In this case, the treatment is slightly different, so please consult with us at the time of consultation.
